Tanhaji… tax-free in Haryana; Fadnavis, Thorat move Maha’

A government led by Shiv Sena, named after Shivaji, had to be reminded it should support a film about a brave lieutenant of the chhatrapati

Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Saif Ali Khan starrer film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior was recently tax-free in Uttar Pradesh by the Yogi government. The film has now been made tax-free in Haryana as well. In Maharashtra, former Maharashtra Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis wrote a letter to Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray, requesting him to remove the tax component from the prices of theatre tickets.

Fadnavis demanded that Ajay Devgn’s film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior be freed of the entertainment tax. On the other hand, state minister Balasaheb Thorat demanded it in the cabinet meeting, where it was later decided that Tanhaji… would be tax-free. Soon Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will announce it.

But it was surprising that a government led by Shiv Sena, named after Chhatrapati Shivaji, had to be reminded that it should support a film dedicated to a lieutenant of the Maratha pride.

The film was recently declared tax free by the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh. Ajay Devgn thanked the Uttar Pradesh chief minister.

Deepika Padukone’s film Chhapaak was released on 10 January along with the film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. While Tanhaji… has been tax-free in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, Deepika’s film has so far been declared tax-free in three INC-ruled states: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

Padukone had gone to JNU some days ago, grabbing news headlines for taking the side of leftists. Regular users and trolls asked for a boycott of Chhapaak, and the demand in the form of hashtag #DeepikaPRBackfires trended on micro-blogging site Twitter. On the one hand, while many Congress leaders came in support of Deepika and distributed free tickets for the film, many nationalists came in support of Tanhaji… and several politicians of the BJP openly supported the move.

The film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior has so far earned a total of Rs 90.96 crore, while Chhapaak has made a collection of Rs 23.92 crore. A big difference between the box office collections of both films can be attributed also to the number of screenings, where Deepika Padukone’s film lagged far behind Ajay’s.
