Tanhaji enters Rs 200 crore club; supporting actor plays it Saif

Actor Saif Ali Khan, who had said in the context of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior that they were the British who conceived India, is now singing a different tune after the film made more than Rs 200 crore at the box office. He is now thanking Ajay Devgn profusely for offering him the role of Udaybhan Rathore while, before the film became a super hit, he had said he had chosen the film because the character he was to portray had motivated him.

What was more contentious, Saif had said in an interview to journalist Anupama Chopra during the promotions of the film, “I don’t think there was any concept of India before the British came.”

Saif had earlier said he was wary of the political narrative the film set that was “dangerous” even though he found the character of Udaybhan Rathore too challenging to not attempt portraying. He said in the interview with Anupama Chopra, “Due to some reasons, I could not take a stand; maybe I’ll do it next time. I was very excited about this character because I found it very attractive. But this is not history. I know very well what history is.”

Now, in what appeared Saif’s bid to stay in the producer’s good books, he thanks Ajay Devgn for his role. Saif said, “So pleased to be a part of such an inspiring and entertaining film. Thank you, Ajay, for this great part that will go down as one of my very best. God bless Om Raut, Kumarji, ADF films and the memory of subedar Tanaji Malusare and Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”

In Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Saif Ali Khan’s character comes across as negative as it is supposed to be a celebration of the Maratha resistance under the leadership of Shivaji whereas Udaybhan Rathore is loyal to Mughal king Aurangzeb against whom the Maratha’s were fighting.

Ajay Devgn’s film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior has become the first superhit film of this year. The film has collected at the box office Rs 200 crore in just 15 days. The film released on 10 January is still showing no sign of losing its commercial momentum.
