Akshay Kumar films make record of box office collections

Akshay Kumar has made history. He has become the only Bollywood actor to earn Rs 700 crore at the box office in a year. In 2015, Salman Khan had earned Rs 500 crore in the ‘one year club’. That year his film Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs 320.34 crore) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Rs 210.16 crore) were released and their total collection was worth Rs 530.50 crore.

Last year, Ranveer Singh had joined the club with Padmaavat (Rs 302.15 crore) and Simba (Rs 240.31 crore). The two films together had grossed Rs 542.46 crore.

When Akshay Kumar released four films in 2019, trade pundits were hoping that he would be the third member of this club. But Akshay not only entered the 500 crore club but went ahead of Salman and Ranveer to earn a record Rs 700 crore.

Akshay started in 2019 with the film Kesari, which earned Rs 154.41 crore. His second release last year was Mission Mangal that grossed Rs 202.98 crore. His third film Housefull 4 grossed Rs 194.60 crore and Good Newwz, his latest release, grossed Rs 162.10 crore. In this way, he reached the mark of Rs 700 crore. His 2019 films grossed 714.09 crores.

Akshay Kumar’s fellow actors are nowhere near him. Hrithik Roshan has secured the second position by earning Rs 317.91 crore from the film War and Rs 146.94 crore from Super 30. His total collection is Rs 464.85 crore.

Tiger Shroff is in the third position. He earned Rs 387.02 crore from War (317.91) and Student of the Year 2 (Rs 69.11 crore).

Salman Khan is in the fourth position this year. His films Bharat (Rs 211.07 crore) and Dabangg 3 (Rs 142.24 crore) earned a total of Rs 352.31 crore. Dabangg 3 is still in the theatres; we can expect something more from it.

Virat Kohli beats Salman Khan in fame, money: Forbes

Forbes India’s list of the top 100 celebrities includes many stalwarts of Bollywood and sports. Bollywood may be ahead in annual earnings, but in terms of rankings, the sports world has surpassed B-town this year. With an annual gross of Rs 250 crore, Team India cricket captain Virat Kohli is the number one celebrity in the country. That is way ahead of Salman Khan’s third position in terms of money and fame.

The ranking of Forbes is determined on the basis of celebrity earnings and fame. So even though Akshay Kumar is ahead in terms of earnings, Virat Kohli is at number one in the rankings despite lower earnings, because Kohli’s fame is more than Akshay Kumar.

Forbes India describes “ICC cricketer of the year in 2018” as the career-highpoint of Virat Kohli. Thrice he has been on the Forbes list since 2017. His earnings in 2019 have been worth Rs 252.72 crore.

While Forbes credits Salman Khan for consistently delivering Rs 100 crore-films — 14 so far — he has had just one release this year, Bharat, making him slip from the first to the third rank.

Following are the top 21 celebrities according to Forbes India in the reversed order.

War: Rs 200 crore film climaxes with chisel-hammer fight

Film War featuring Bollywood actors Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff released in theatres today. Equipped with breathtaking action scenes, emotions and suspense, the thriller is getting a good response at the box office. What is interesting, the action in the film is no treadmill stuff involving merely guns, fisticuffs and kicks. The filmmakers promise their action choreographer will offer an edge-of-the-seat entertainer.

The fight scenes in the movie have been filmed on the ground, under-water and in the air. There are also bike and car chasing scenes. The film is innovative in the genre of action. In the climax, you get to see something that you have hardly seen in any Hindi film till now. Tiger Shroff and Hrithik Roshan face each other after a long cat-and-mouse chase.

War climax

Khalid (Tiger), an Indian soldier, is assigned to eliminate Kabir (Hrithik), a former soldier turned rogue, who mentored Khalid. This leads to ‘war’ between them.

To avoid spoilers, we skip further details of the plot and move to the climax. An intense fight breaks out between the characters essayed by Tiger Shroff and Hrithik Roshan, where they fight each other with a chisel and a hammer. It is exciting to see Hrithik-Tiger fighting with these tools commonly used in home repair.

Cast

  • Hrithik Roshan as Kabir Luthra
  • Tiger Shroff as Khalid Khan
  • Vaani Kapoor as Naina
  • Ashutosh Rana as Colonel Luthra, Kabir’s father
  • Anupriya Goenka as Aditi
  • Dipannita Sharma as Dr Mallika Singhal
  • Soni Razdan as Khalid’s mother
  • Swaroopa Ghosh as Sherna Patel
  • Sanjeev Vasta as Rizwan Iiyasi
  • Arif Zakaria as Dr Utpal Bisbas
  • Mohit Chauhan as VK Naidu
  • Salmin Sheriff as Oslav
  • Imran Ahmed as Saini
  • Shahbaz Akhtar as Vishal
  • Shrikant Dwivedi as Derrick
  • Jesse Lever as Muthu
  • Midhat Ullah Khan as Saeed Addam
  • Ravi Awana as Basheer Hassib

Box office prospects

While the description above may sound a little funny, the direction and camera work is spellbinding. The film will attract crowds by word-of-mouth. It is likely to do good business at the box office. However, this film having cost Rs 200 crore, the margin has to be huge to make profits.

Kabir Singh highest grosser: Biggest hit for Shahid, Kiara

New Delhi/Mumbai: While film Kabir Singh has broken many records at the box office, the film proved to be the most successful film in the careers of Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani so far.

Kabir Singh was released on 21 June. Forty days later, the film is still casting a spell on the audience. It has made a total collection of more than Rs 275 crore. The overall collection of the film Kabir Singh has been Rs 277.07 crore.

The film has been receiving a good response at the theatres even 40 days after its release. This is remarkable, given that there are big Hollywood and Bollywood movies at the theatres that Kabir Singh is competing with even though it is running on fewer screens. The box office collections of Kabir Singh continue to set new records while the gross of other films released around the same time tapered off.

While from Bollywood, Kangana Ranaut’s movie Judgementall (sic) Hai Kya and Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30 are in the theatres, The Lion King and Spiderman: Far from Home from Bollywood threatened Kabir Singh‘s prospects but could not succeed in dethroning it from the position of audience’s most favourite film in the recent times.

Kabir Singh: Controversy and success

Kabir Singh is a Hindi-language romantic film written and directed by Sandeep Vanga. It is a remake of his Telugu film Arjun Reddy (2017). Jointly produced by Cine1 Studios and T-Series, the film stars Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani. It focuses on the title character, an alcoholic surgeon who goes on a self-destructive path after his girlfriend is forced to marry someone else.

The film’s principal photography began in October 2018 and ended in March 2019. The film was theatrically released in India on 21 June. It received mixed reviews, with criticism directed at it for “glamorising misogyny” and “toxic masculinity” (terms used in the reviews of Business Today and Hindustan Times), though Kapoor’s performance was praised.

At the box office, Kabir Singh has become Kapoor’s highest-grossing film as a sole male star. It has emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2019. At the second, third, fourth and fifth positions are Uri: The Surgical Strike, Bharat, Gully Boy and Total Dhamaal.

Will Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30 finally cross Kangana Ranaut obstacle?

Mumbai: Earlier this month, Hrithik said he was changing the release date of Super 30 to save his film from being “desecrated by yet another media circus”. The date was yet to be declared.

The actor’s statement came after the release of his bugbear Kangana Ranaut’s Mental Hai Kya was changed to 26 July, only to coincide with the then theatrical arrival of Super 30, a claim producer Ekta Kapoor dismissed, saying the decision had nothing to do with Kangana’s equation with Hrithik.

Super 30, based on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar and his educational programme Super 30, is produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and Reliance Entertainment.

“Arriving early! #Super30 will be releasing on July 12,” the official handle of Reliance Entertainment tweeted on Saturday.

In her response to the earlier change in Super 30 date, Kangana alleged Hrithik was in on the decision from the beginning, calling the statement a “sob story”.

The film has had a tough birth.

Earlier, Super 30 was scheduled to be released on 25 January, the same date as Kangana’s Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi.

In 2016, Kangana claimed that Hrithik and she were in a relationship but her Krrish 3 co-star said it was not true. The fight became public after Hrithik sued her and Kangana counter-sued him.

Super 30, also featuring Amit Sadh, Mrunal Thakur and Nandish Sandhu, found itself at the centre of controversy over allegations of sexual harassment against the film’s director Vikas Bahl last October.
