The 24-year-old seamer underwent a surgery last Wednesday in Leeds before returning to India. The surgery was successful and he will commence rehabilitation under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Shardul Thakur as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ODI squad,” BCCI Acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary said in a release.
The first ODI begins on 12 July at Nottingham, followed by the second match at London on 14 July and third match at Leeds on 17 July.
Bumrah suffered an injury to his left thumb during India’s first T2OI against Ireland in Dublin and was subsequently ruled out of the ongoing T2OI series against England. Deepak Chahar was called-up as a replacement for Bumrah in the T20I squad.
Bumrah is currently the number one ranked bowler in ODIs and his absence will come as a big blow for India. Shardul, his replacement, has played just three ODIs, in which he has picked up 5 wickets.
The visitors started their much-awaited tour on a bright note by comprehensively winning the first T20I by 8 wickets. India will take on England in the 2nd T20I at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff in a bid to win their sixth successive T20I series.
The Virat Kohli-led unit will be playing three T20Is, three ODIs, and five Tests during their 70-day tour of England.
Shardul recently starred in Chennai Super Kings’ victorious campaign in IPL, where he scalped 16 wickets in 13 matches for the three-time champions.
India is scheduled to play three ODIs against England: Nottingham -12 July, London – 14 July & Leeds – 17 July.
