Saroj Khan: Katrina Kaif removed me from Thugs…

Saroj Khan might recall how many times Madhuri Dixit in her prime had got her contracts replacing competitors

Mumbai: The choreography of Saroj Khan is less visible on the celluloid nowadays. She was the most sought after ‘dance director’ in the 1980s and 90s. A new generation of choreographers have replaced the old, but this does not mean Khan is out of the scene. Saroj Khan has made a sensational statement that she was removed from the film Thugs of Hindostan at the insistence of actress Katrina Kaif.

When a famous choreographer is removed after she is signed for a film, the reason must have been substantive. However, contrary to the reports in the recent past that Saroj Khan had decided to retire due to her poor health, she was doing fine. Saroj Khan now says, “I want to work. This is fake news.”

“I want to work better and I want to go to the film sets,” Saroj says.

She says further, “I was part of the movie Thugs of Hindostan but Prabhudeva took my place.”

Prior to dancing to the tune of the song “Suraiya”, Katrina Kaif said that she did not want to dance without practice. After that, choreographer Prabhudeva replaced Saroj Khan!

Khan said, “Finally, your work speaks. I need not bow before anyone and ask for work.”

Saroj is now eagerly waiting for the release of the film Kalank. In this movie, Saroj Khan has choreographed the dance moves of Alia Bhatt and Madhuri Dixit.

Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, Varun Dhawan and Aditya Roy Kapoor also will be seen in Kalank, portraying important characters. A teaser and many posters of the film have been released. Kalank will be released on 17 April.

Saroj Khan’s ‘plight’ nothing new

Actors virtually dictating to directors who should choreograph for a film is commonplace in the Bollywood industry. Saroj Khan might recall how many times Madhuri Dixit in her prime had got her contracts replacing competitors.

Of course, the preference is not necessarily borne of malice. Different actors are comfortable with different genres of dance. They often recommend choreographers on the basis of whose style suits them.
