Jadhav approaches career end; Pandey, Pandya better options

India are playing New Zealand in the last of the three-match ODI cricket series at Mount Mongui. During the toss in this match, Indian team captain Virat Kohli made a change in the team for this last One Day International match on the tour of New Zealand. After this change, it was almost decided that the international career of one of the team’s all-rounders was over. Kedar Jadhav can hardly be seen playing international cricket for the Indian team.

There are many reasons why Jadhav is no longer playing international cricket for the Indian team. In fact, some new all-rounders are overshadowing him. It is now almost impossible for him to be selected in the ODI team again.

The right-handed middle-order batsman may have a good average and strike rate on the lower order, but he is no longer proving useful to the team if given the chance. Besides, he is going to be 35-years-old next month. His age will play in the selectors’ minds as a big factor. Although his name is included in the BCCI’s central contract, he may now have to sit outside the playing XI.

Jadhav only plays in the ODI format for the Indian team whereas, this year, the Indian team is focusing on T20 Asia Cup and T20 World Cup as well as Test cricket. India has to play three ODIs against South Africa in March after this series. After that, the Indian team does not have any scheduled ODI series. The team has Ravindra Jadeja as an all-rounder and Hardik Pandya is going to return.

Jadhav, who made his debut in international cricket in the year 2014, has played 73 ODIs for India so far, scoring 1,389 runs in 52 innings, remained unbeaten 19 times. His best score in ODI cricket is 120 runs. Kedar is scoring runs in ODI cricket at an average of 42.09 with a strike rate of 101.61. His has scored two centuries and six half-centuries, but at present, his form does not impress.

The captain does not use Jadhav much as a bowler. The team is looking for a proper batsman to play at No. 6, who should be ready by the time the World Cup of 2023 arrives. Manish Pandey has managed to win the hearts of all by batting well at that position while the arrival of Hardik Pandya will leave Jadhav out of the playing eleven anyway, as Pandya is known for good bowling and fielding along with his feats with the bat.
