It’s all about business at Dharma Productions

Mumbai: Dharma Productions was the most successful production house last year. Karan Johar’s Production House, has an exciting blend of content and commercial films, a balance which most of the producers in today’s time are attempting to maintain.

The numbers speak for themselves. The six movies made by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions in the last two years collectively earned at least Rs 425 crore. Two of them, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), directed by Johar himself, and Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017), made it to the exclusive club of movies that earned upwards of Rs100 crore.

The upcoming films produced by Dharma commercial are a romantic comedy like Student of The Year 2, Raazi, Brahmastra, Dhadak, Simmba.

Karan Johar also announced a film titled Kesari based on The Battle of Saragarhi, starring Akshay Kumar & Parineeti Chopra, set to release at Holi 2019, and Shiddhat, a collaboration with Fox Star Studios and Sajid Nadiadwala, releasing 19 April 2019.

Dharma confirmed Rannbhoomi starring Varun Dhawan & will be directed by Shashank Khaitan is scheduled to release in Diwali 2020.

Dharma Production produced the first film was Raj Khosla’s Dostana in1980 starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, and Zeenat Aman. The film was the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year.

The production house reached a turning point with the release of Karan Johar directorial debut, the blockbuster romantic drama Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The film won several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and the Filmfare Award for Best Film, and has become a classic over the years.

Dharma’s next release was Wake Up Sid and counter-terrorism thriller Kurbaan. Both Wake Up Sid and Kurbaan received critical acclaim, but the latter failed to make a mark at the box office.

Karan Johar’s coming-of-age comedy-drama Student of the Year in 2012, which marked the debut of its three lead actors Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.

In April 2017 Dharma bought the theatre rights to distribute the Hindi version of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion worldwide which turned out to be an all-time blockbuster and grossed more than US$260 million worldwide.


The producer turned director is looking to carry forward the series of successful films like Badrinath Ki DulhaniaBaahubali 2Ae Dil Hai MushkilKapoor and Sons and Dear Zindagi which won them not just critical acclaim but also Box-Office numbers.
