INC youth wing smuggling liquor? Here’s what police record says

While BJP spokesman Sambit Patra’s allegation has been met with a legal notice from Srinivas BV of the INC, the truth is difficult to hide

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday condemned the Indian National Congress (INC) of “liquor smuggling” after the youth wing functionaries of the latter were caught in the act in the national capital. Spokesman of the BJP Sambit Patra said this had exposed the Congress’s “character”.

The Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas BV saw a case of witch-hunting in the arrest. He called it a “conspiracy” aimed at defaming his organisation’s relief work for “the poor” at the time of lockdown.

However, the two people Delhi Police says it has arrested — Shravan Rao (34) and Manish (24) — in the night of Sunday from a place near the Delhi-Gurugram border with illicit liquor, are indeed members of the youth wing of the INC. By seeing it as a “conspiracy”, Srinivas has, in effect, owned the suspected smugglers.

The police record

BJP spokesman Patra said while his party’s workers were busy in relief work for the needy during the nationwide lockdown, the “national office-bearers of the Congress are smuggling expensive liquor” in the national capital. “This is the character of the Congress… What a strategy Rahul ji,” Patra tweeted, taking a dig at the former INC president.

BJP youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha’s media in-charge Rohit Chahal tweeted a video of a private car which he alleged belong to Srinivas of the INC. Chahal alleged this vehicle was used for liquor distribution.

Chahal tweeted the above, quoting a tweet of National Secretary and Media Incharge, Indian Youth Congress, Amrish Ranjan Pandey who had posted a legal notice that has been served to Patra.

Srinivas said “our crime” is that food and medicine have been provided by us to lakhs of people”. This will neither stop nor scare his organisation, the INC politician tweeted.

But the FIR states that vehicle number TS15ES 0123 was bringing illicit liquor from Haryana. It says an informer had tipped off the cop and the sub-inspector of the region, who apprehended the vehicle, before the arrest. And this Scorpio car indeed belongs to Srinivas of the INC.
