Vikas Dubey arrested from Ujjain

Dubey had been on the run since the killing of the policemen in a shootout in Bikru village near Kanpur on 3 July

Gangster Vikas Dubey, wanted in the killing of eight policemen near Kanpur, was arrested on Thursday morning. He was arrested in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, sources said.

Dubey had been on the run since the killing of the policemen in a shootout in Bikru village near Kanpur on 3 July.

The police had been on a lookout for Dubey in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states. More than 40 teams were on the lookout.

Vikas Dubey was caught in Ujjain around the same time two of his aides were killed in separate encounters in UP. His closest aide, Aman Dubey, was killed yesterday.

CCTV footage showed Vikas Dubey, in a mask, being taken by half a dozen cops.

An informer spotted Vikas Dubey at a temple around 8 AM. The local shopkeeper reportedly alerted the police. When he emerged from the temple, security guards questioned him. “He produced a fake ID card and then there was a fight. The guards got him to the police,” said an officer.

Five aides of the gangster were killed in separate gunfights in multiple locations, most recent being Prabhat Mishra and Praveen Dubey who were gunned down on Thursday.

Praveen Dubey was killed in Etawah when he was trying to escape after stealing a car. Police, meanwhile, brought Mishra to Kanpur after his arrest in Haryana’s Faridabad. The cops gunned him down when he tried to flee from the custody.

On 7 July, gangster Vikas Dubey was spotted at a hotel in Faridabad, the first time his whereabouts was known in what has been a game of cat and mouse since his escape from the scene of the gunfight.

On 8 July, two sub-inspectors posted in Kanpur, who were believed to have alerted Dubey about the police actions, were arrested.

Dubey ― charged in 60 criminal cases including murder, kidnapping, extortion and rioting ― had allegedly been alerted to the raid by local policemen and had set up an ambush. When the policemen reached the village, Dubey and his men, armed with AK-47s, fired from rooftops.

The police said they were fixing the van’s flat tyre when Prabhat snatched a gun and tried to escape. He shot at the cops and the policemen retaliated, according to the police. “He was injured in the leg. He died in hospital,” senior police officer Prashant Kumar said.

The police shot dead another aide Bauva Dubey aka Praveen this morning in Etawah, around 220 km from state capital Lucknow.

“At around 3 AM, a Swift Dzire was looted by four armed men on a Scorpio. They were stopped about an hour later by cops when they tried to escape. The police chased them and an unidentified man suffered multiple injuries in crossfire. He was declared brought dead at the hospital,” senior police officer Akash Tomar said. The man was later identified as Praveen, Dubey’s aide.
