The police team comprising 16 police personnel had gone to the village around 3:30 AM after receiving a tip-off about the presence of Vikas Dubey there. But Dubey and his gang knew they were coming. They stationed a JCB (earthmover) on the way to their hideout to stall the movement of the cops. The gang fired from the terrace of a house as soon as the police team entered their lane after crossing the earthmover.
The gangster and his men subsequently looted the arms of the policemen who fled to save their lives.
Police sources say nearly the whole village, sympathetic to the criminal, had gathered at the place and approached the police menacingly. Dubey and his gang used them as a shield and fired from behind the crowd.
All senior police officials including ADG Kanpur, IG and others have reached the spot. Uttar Pradesh DGP HC Awasthi and ADG law-and-order Prashant Kumar have reached the scene of crime too.
Kanpur ADG JN Singh said, “Eight police personnel lost their lives after they were fired upon criminals when a police team raided this area in Vikaru village in search of the criminal.”
Vikas Dubey is wanted in over 100 criminal cases. He had shot dead a minister-rank politician inside a police station a few years ago.
Police have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to locate Vikas and his gang who are now absconding. The cops are studying the records of about 100 mobile phones that the gang was using.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has consoled the families of the eight police personnel who lost their lives in the incident in District Kanpur. He has directed the DGP to take strict action against criminals and also sought report of the incident. The chief minister is constantly in touch with DGP Awasthi and additional chief secretary (home).
Vikas Dubey carries a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head. Once a member of the district panchayat, he has at least 53 charges of murder attempts against him.
