Fadnavis: Govt hiding 950 COVID-19 deaths in Mumbai

Fadnavis has made serious allegations that the Maharashtra government has suppressed data about almost 950 COVID-19 deaths in Mumbai

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the state Devendra Fadnavis on Monday alleged that Uddhav Thackeray-led government is hiding some 950 virus-related deaths from Mumbai.

He further added that the BMC has refused to follow the ICMR guidelines and certain deaths were not reported as occurred due to COVID-19. Despite clear guidelines from the ICMR, why the audit committee showed those deaths as non-COVID-19 deaths, questioned the former chief minister.

He said the action of the committee was not only condemnable but also criminal in nature.

In a letter written to CM Uddhav Thackeray, Fadnavis has made serious allegations that the Maharashtra government has suppressed data about almost 950 COVID-19 deaths in Mumbai.

In his letter Devendra Fadnavis has alleged, “Before announcing a COVID-19 related death, it goes to the Death Audit Committee formed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). We have noticed that there are at least 451 recent deaths that were not declared as COVID-19 deaths. As per the ICMR guidelines, these were COVID-19 deaths but the Death Audit Committee showed these as non-COVID-19 deaths.”

The BJP leader also alleged that 500 COVID-19 deaths in Maharashtra have not been reported to the audit committee.

“Secondly, there were 500 coronavirus-related deaths that were not reported to the Death Audit Committee. So there are around 950 COVID deaths that are suppressed. This is serious and criminal in nature” Fadnavis claimed in his letter.

Devendra Fadnavis has questioned whether this was done under someone’s pressure and has demanded that the state government should act against the Death Audit Committee.

On Monday, the Maharashtra government had sought details of COVID-19 related deaths from the BMC. Now, Devendra Fadnavis has called this a “cover-up exercise” and a “lame attempt to hide facts”.

As on June 14, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in worst-hit Mumbai stood at 2,182, as per the state government.

“451 deaths have been termed as non-COVID deaths by the death audit committee. However, as per guidelines of the ICMR, all these deaths had occurred due to COVID-19,” the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly alleged.

We demand a clarification on under whose pressure the committee reported those deaths as non-COVID-19, he said.

He said the action of the committee was not only condemnable but also criminal in nature.

“There is another incident where some 500 deaths that occurred in various hospitals in Mumbai were not even referred to the death audit committee. I want to know what action state is going to take,” he said and demanded a stern action against the guilty.
