Erdogan sticks nose in Kashmir: ‘No land border can divide Muslims’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stuck his nose in the Kashmir issue. Addressing both houses of the Pakistani parliament, he has made a statement that could spoil Turkey’s relations with India.

Erdogan accused India of committing atrocities in Kashmir to which, he said, Turkey would not remain silent. He promised unconditional support to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on the issue.

The entire speech of Erdogan revolved around Islam and Muslims. As such, he had long left behind the secular legacy of Mustafa Kamal Pasha aka Ataturk. Erdogan has been trying to become the leader of Muslims around the world. He said today no border drawn on land could divide those who believed in Islam.

Erdogan took on US President Donald Trump, too, in his speech. He said that the US peace plan in the Middle East actually had an aggressive intent. He said that Muslim countries needed to unite wherever Muslims are being killed.

The Turkish president called Pakistan, which the world knows as the epicentre of terrorism, its biggest sufferer. Amid the applause of Imran Khan and the rest of Pakistani MPs, Erdogan said that he would unconditionally support Pakistan in the meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). In October 2019, Pakistan was spared the FATF blacklist due to the support it got from Turkey besides China and Malaysia.

Erdogan warmed the cockles of Imran Khan’s heart when he called Pakistan his second home. He said, “Your pain is my pain. Our friendship is based on love and respect. Pakistan is on the rise and it cannot happen in a few days. It will take time and Turkey will continue to support it.”

The president of Turkey said that he felt blessed coming to the Pakistani parliament where he had paid a visit earlier in 2016.

Earlier, Imran Khan drove Erdogan’s car and took him to the presidential house.
