BJP politician, father, brother shot dead in Kashmir

J&K Police said BJP leader Wasim and his family were attacked at around 9 PM while sitting outside a shop near the local police station

Suspected terrorists shot dead Sheikh Waseem Bari, a local BJP politician and two members of his family in Kashmir’s Bandipore district late on 8 July. Sheikh Waseem Bari was a former president of the BJP in Bandipora district, 60 km north of Srinagar.

The terrorists killed Sheikh Waseem Bari’s father Basheer Ahmad and brother Umar in the attack too. The incident took place at his shop in Bandipore, said police.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) said the family had a security detail of eight security personnel, however, none of them was present at the time of the attack.

“Former Bandipora BJP president Wasim Bari, his father & brother, all 3 succumbed to their injuries. The family had a component of 8 security people but unfortunately, none of them was kept along at the time of the incident,” J&K DGP Dilbag Singh said.

The police have cordoned off the entire area. The security forces are conducting a search operation to catch the terrorists. Bari was a young BJP politician and well known figure in Bandipore district.

Sources say the guards have been arrested for dereliction of duty and an investigation has been started.

BJP president JP Nadda said Wasim’s death was a huge loss to the party.

“We lost Sheikh Wasim Bari, his father & brother in Bandipora, Jammu and Kashmir today in a cowardly attack on them. This is a huge loss for the party. My deepest condolences are with the family. The entire Party stands with the bereaved family. I assure that their sacrifice will not go in vain,” Nadda tweeted.

Yesterday, the NIA had arrested a local youth for providing logistical support to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists who carried out the Pulwama terror attack in February 2019 by ramming an explosive laden car into a CRPF convoy killing 40 troopers.

Bilal Ahmed Kuchey, a resident of Kakpora of Pulwama district, was the seventh person to be arrested in connection with the case. He is supposed to have given shelter to the JeM terrorists and provided them with high end phones for communication with their handlers in Pakistan and also among themselves while planning the execution of the attack.
