Bengal BJP MLA Debendra Nath Ray found hanging in market

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh also backed the family’s demand for a CBI probe into the incident

BJP MLA from Hemtabad, North Dinajpur district of West Bengal, Debendra Nath Roy, was found hanging in Bindal village near his village home on Monday morning.

Family members of MLA claim that he has been killed and hanged later. People of the area also claimed that the BJP MLA was murdered and then hanged. However, police said the cause of death will be ascertained after post mortem. The body has been sent to Raigunj hospital for post mortem.

“Body of Shri Debendra Nath Ray, BJP MLA from Hemtabad, a reserved seat, in Uttar Dinajpur, was found hanging like this in Bindal, near his village home. People are of the clear opinion that he was first killed and then hung. His crime? He joined the BJP in 2019,” said West Bengal BJP in a tweet.

BJP leader Rahul Sinha demanded CBI inquiry into the incident and accused Trinamool Congress of being involved in Roy’s death. “I request West Bengal CM to order CBI inquiry to find the truth behind the killing,” Sinha said.

“Ray was found hanging near a shop at Hemtabad area this (Monday) morning. We have started an investigation,” news agency quoted a a senior district police officer as saying.

Roy was earlier a CPI(M) MLA but had changed camps and joined BJP in 2019. Roy had joined the saffron party in Delhi in presence of senior BJP leaders.

The body has been sent to a hospital in Raiganj for post-mortem.

“The investigation is on. We are awaiting the post-mortem report,” said a senior police officer of North Dinajpur district.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh also backed the family’s demand for a CBI probe into the incident.

“He has been murdered. Someone close to him killed him. Otherwise, why would he go out in the dead of the night. In West Bengal, an MLA has no protection. The law and order has collapsed here. A local TMC Yuva leader may be behind this. A full-fledged probe needs to be done. If needed the probe must be done by a central investigation agency,” he said.

The central leadership of the party has asked state party leaders to visit the district.

TMC’s North Dinajpur district president Kanaia Lal Agarwal also denied his party’s involvement and also demanded an investigation into the case.

“This is a case of unnatural death. Now, only a probe can find out whether he committed suicide or he was murdered. He was called outside his home in the dead of the night. An investigation will help us find out who had called him and why he had gone outside,” Agarwal said.

Roy had won the 2016 Assembly polls on a CPM ticket. He had joined the BJP last year.
